Best way to travel Kumamoto-Kagoshima (Modern Japan)

Kagoshima (鹿児島) is one of the greatest fun place in Japan. It is located in the southern part of Kyushu Island and is best known for Sakurajima (桜島), an active volcano.

If you are in Kumamoto and planning to visit Kagoshima, then, here are all the tips you’ll need to know for your first visit to Kagoshima from Kumamoto.

How to get in : Public Transportation

There are 2 ways to travel to Kagoshima from Kumamoto.

JR Kyushu: Shinkansen (Bullet Train)

Kyushu Shinkansen runs several hours from Kumamoto Sta. If you are planning to go by Shinkansen then, you need to ride from Kumamoto Sta. and get off at Kagoshima-Chuo. The total distance is 170 km, which takes not more than an hour.

Kumamoto-Kagoshima Bus

If you love to enjoy the natural beauty while traveling then, we personally recommend you to go by Bus. There is a bus i.e. Kirishima-go (きりしま号) which goes to Kagoshima from Kumamoto city, providing a 3 hours 30 minutes journey in the lap of nature.

Kirishima-go Bus depart from Kumamoto Sta. and goes via Kumamoto Kotsu Center. Above is a list of Bus-stops. Please be careful, only Kyushu Sanko Bus operator departs from Seibusako Bus stop while other operators depart from Kumamoto Sta.

Sightseeing Spots:

Kagoshima is known for its abundant nature like Volcano, Beach, Marine activities, Historical monuments and more. So, you must visit here whenever you get chance. Here are the some wonderful spots you must not miss.

It is at just 2 minutes of walking distance from Kagoshima Port. Just come to Dolphin Port and have rest with coffee or sweets. There are many restaurants, coffee shops which offer various local cuisines and local products as a souvenir.

Kagoshima Chuo Station Area:

There are JR train, Shinkansen, Shopping Center, varieties of Restaurant and Souvenir shops inside the Kagoshima Chuo Station. Please refer below image to find some other hot spots, if you have time please take around.

The downtown of the Kagoshima. It has restaurants, shops and Karaoke Place. You must take a walk around here. It is very close to Dolphin Port at just 10 minutes walking distance.
Don’t forget:
  • Historical place like; Tsurumaru Castle, Okubo Toshimichi Statue, Nanshu Cemetery.
  • Sakurajima Volcano
  • Beef and Sweet Potato

Kagoshima is known for its great regional cuisines like sweet potatoes (satsumaimo), Kurobuta (black pork), Kuroushi (black beef). Also, there are a lot of souvenirs like; confections made from sweet potatoes, shirokuma ice dessert (Berkshire Pork).

Tourists must try “Saigo Donburi”. It has a blend of black pork, chicken wings, black beef, egg, ginger and more.. The taste is just WOW! It is in Kagoshima Chuo Station, inside of Gourmet near the information center.


If you are going for a same day tour for Kagoshima, or, you are on business tour and have only few hours but don’t know what to do? Then we would recommend you to take a ride on Machi-meguri Bus, buy one day pass and visit the spots of your own choice.

But, it is worthy to stay there for 1-2 nights and enjoy beaches and must visit “Amami Island“. Hope it will help you in traveling from Kumamoto to Kagoshima and how to enjoy there! Have a nice journey!
