Nagasaki (長崎) is now known as the city of Emotion, Love, Peace mostly because of a history of atomic bomb. Nagasaki is the second city of Japan that suffered atomic bomb attacked after Hiroshima during 2nd World War. It is located in the north-west region in Kyushu Island, Japan.

Nagasaki is known for the Peace Park, magnificent attraction of Huis Ten Bosch, China town, UNESCO World Heritage “Oura Church”. If you are in Kumamoto and planning to visit Nagasaki or vice-versa then, here are all the tips you’ll need to know for your first visit to Nagasaki.

Nagasaki has both an international as well as a domestic airport. So, it’s easy accessible  from any part of Japan and across the world such as; Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo and Osaka by air.

By Air:

  • Shanghai – 1 hour 35 minutes approx.
  • Seoul – 2 hour 25 minutes approx.
  • Tokyo, Heneda Airport – 1 hour 50 minutes approx.
  • Osaka, Itami, Kobe Airport – 1 hour 15 minutes approx.

By Train:

  • Tokyo Sta – 7 hours approx.
  • Osaka Sta – 4 hours 30 minutes approx.

Express Bus: Rindo-go Bus (Kumamoto~Nagasaki)

There is only “Rindo-go” (りんどう号) that connects Kumamoto-Nagasaki. You can ride the bus from Kumamoto Sta. The one-way trip between Kumamoto to Nagaskai takes around 4 hours (cost 3,700 Yen) in the lap of nature. For online booking Click

Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum at learning about the tragedy caused during the World War 2, understanding the situations during atomic bomb attack and their affects and the history of nuclear arms development. Also there is a large fountain and many memorials presented by many governments and associations across the world. Huis Ten Bosch is theme park based inspired by Dutch city. When you will visit here, you will feel like you are in Europe because of European atmosphere due to architectures, magnificent canals and colorful gardens.

There are various events throughout the year like; fireworks in summer, tulip festival in spring and Sakura season. You can relax at the resorts which are divided into Theme Park Zone and Harbor Zone. The main attraction is the boating within the city with your hubbies and friends. Gunkajima is known as the Battle Island and its formal name was Hashima. It is abandoned from 1970’s when all the residents left the island.

Amazing night view of the Nagasaki City is an incredible experience. Mount Inasayama is almost at the same height of Tokyo Tower i.e. 333 m high mountain and just close to Nagasaki city center. It is said that the night view from Inasayama is among Japan’s top 3 best night views from mountains. Also, there is Hikari Restaurant at the rooftop of the Mt. Inasa observation tower to enjoy lunch/dinner with an incredible view.

Tourist can go at the top by car. It is recommended to go by rope-way and not miss the amazing view of Nagasaki City in day or night! It cost 720 Yen (one way) and 1230 Yen (round trip). It is accessible from Nagasaki Sta. by bus/streetcar in just 10-20 min.

Oura Church is a symbol of faith.‘Hidden Christian sites in Nagasaki’ backed for World Heritage status in 2018, it was built in 1864 by foreign missionaries. It is Japan’s oldest existing Church and is designated as a National Treasure.

Access to Oura Church from Nagasaki Station by tram just takes 30 minutes. Entrance fee is 1000 Yen.

Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown is well known for the Nagasaki Lantern Festival which marks the beginning of Chinese New Year celebration. During Nagasaki Lantern Festival, entire Nagasaki city is illuminated by beautifully colored lanterns. Also, there are numerous performances at Shinchi Chinatown for 2 weeks.

The main events are Emperor’s Parade, Dragon Dance, Chinese Lion Dance, Chinese Acrobatics, Mazu Procession etc. Shinchi Chinatown is accessible from Nagasaki Sta. by Nagasaki Tram in just 10-12 min and just close to Dejima

Nagasaki is best known for Nagasaki Chanpon and Sara-Udon. It is a Noodle dish and is very popular around Japan.

As a souvenir or desert you must try Castella. It is deliciously steamed sponge cake. There are flavored with different ingredients like; honey, green-tea (maccha), chestnuts.

If you are in Japan or planning to make it worth it, then you must visit Nagasaki “City of Emotion, Love, Peace” with your family or friends. It’s worthy to stay at-least 1 night in Nagasaki. If you are going for the same day tour for Nagaski, or, you are on business tour and have only few hours but don’t know what to do then,
